Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

There are a few cases when tooth extractions are warranted, including if the tooth is damaged beyond the point of repair, there is a baby tooth that refuses to fall out on its own, or one of your wisdom teeth is impacted below the gumline. If that’s the case for you, we will review all of your treatment options and explain why we recommend moving forward with an extraction. Then, we can answer any questions you have, create your custom treatment plan, and provide you with an estimate of the cost.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

There are two different types of tooth extractions. The first is a simple extraction, which means we can grip the tooth, rock it loose, and remove it from the socket. The second is a surgical extraction, which means we need to create an incision in the gums before we can remove the tooth section by section. In both cases, the first step is always the same: to numb your mouth. That way, you don’t feel any pain as we work to remove the tooth or teeth in question.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Before you return home, your emergency dentist will provide you with a list of aftercare instructions. A few general ones include:

  • Not exercising or lifting anything heavy
  • Taking prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed
  • Changing the gauze pads as needed
  • Eating only extremely soft foods, like plain yogurt
  • Drinking plenty of water (not with a straw!)
  • Keeping your head elevated, even while you sleep
  • Brushing and flossing carefully around the extraction site
